What Insurance Coverage Do You Need for Full-time RV Living?

white Maul type-C motorhome used for full-time rv livingRecreational vehicles (RVs) are an exciting way to tour the country. Many people embark on RV road trips every year to enjoy vacation, visit family or otherwise enjoy a change of scenery. Some people choose to go a step further and use these versatile vehicles as a long-term residence (e.g., over six months). In these cases, normal RV insurance may not be sufficient, and a full-time RV living insurance policy should be considered.

What Makes Full-time RV Living Coverage Different?

A standard RV insurance policy offers coverage similar to what you might have for your car, albeit at higher limits. This may include the following:

  • Liability coverage for injury or damage you cause to others or their possessions with your RV
  • Collision coverage for collision-related incidents, such as hitting a pole or getting into an accident with another vehicle
  • Comprehensive coverage for noncollision incidents, such as vandalism, theft or extreme weather
  • Contents coverage for damage or loss related to personal possessions within an RV, up to policy limits

A full-time RV insurance policy can include these options while offering enhanced protections. A full-time policy can include coverage for liability incidents that occur while the RV is parked, such as at a campsite. This may include the following:

  • Personal liability coverage for injuries or damage to others you’re liable for in or around your RV while it’s parked, such as a guest falling
  • Medical payments coverage for minor medical bills for injured third parties in or around the RV, regardless of fault
  • Loss assessment coverage for damage to common areas if the RV resides at an RV park or other long-term living area with shared space

Is Coverage Really Necessary?

RV insurance should be considered necessary for numerous reasons, especially for full-timers who may have visitors or passersby coming in or around their RV. For one, motorized RVs are typically beholden to the same financial responsibility rules as cars—meaning certain insurance could be required by law.

For another, personal liability incidents can cost thousands of dollars, which would need to be covered out of pocket without adequate full-time RV insurance.
